Our History

To fully appreciate the potential of GDF SUEZ Energy North America, it’s important to see where we’ve come from.

1983
The company we know today as GDF SUEZ Energy North America gets its start as CRSS Financial Services in Houston, Texas. Originally, we were involved in independent power generation and the development power projects.

1990
American Tractebel Corporation, a subsidiary of Tractebel S.A., revises its business strategy from venture capital to focus exclusively on developing operating, and owning independent power facilities in North America.

1995
CRSS becomes a Tractebel company, instantly acquiring a century of energy experience and significantly increasing Tractebel S.A.’s North American presence.

1997
Tractebel Energy Marketing, now doing business as SUEZ Energy Marketing NA, is formed to trade energy commodities (namely, electricity and gas), pursuing the origination and marketing of energy transactions in the United States and Canada.

1999
SUEZ expands its ownership in Tractebel from 50% to more than 98%.

2000
Tractebel LNG North America, now doing business as SUEZ LNG NA, made first LNG delivery ever to Puerto Rico.

2002
Tractebel Energy Services, now doing business as SUEZ Energy Resources NA, a provider of retail energy for commercial and industrial customers is formed.

2003
Tractebel opens a 245 MW cogeneration facility in Mexico.

2004
Tractebel Energy Services is now doing business as SUEZ Energy Resources NA, which in 2008 is offering services in 14 states.

2007

SUEZ Energy North America acquires Canadian wind developer Ventus Energy Inc. and launches the company’s North American foray into wind power. The acquistion brings to the company a portfolio of 25 wind energy facilities and development projects in six provinces in eastern Canada.

2008

SUEZ Energy North America becomes GDF SUEZ Energy North America in conjunction with its parent company's merger with Gaz de France. The new entity, GDF SUEZ, is the world's largest Independent Power Producer and the largest supplier of LNG in the Atlantic Basin.

GDF SUEZ Energy North America acquires FirstLight Power Resources and becomes the fifth largest power generator in New England.
